Society for Music, Arts and Culture take pleasure in inviting you to “Understanding Buddhism”, by Venerable Thomthog Rinpoche (The Abbot, Namgyal Monastery, McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh) on 5 (Saturday) and 6 (Sunday) March 2016 at Sri Dakshinamurthy Auditorium, P.S. Higher Secondary School, 215, RK Mutt Road, Mylapore, Chennai.

We are fortunate that Rinpoche has agreed to do a 2-day teaching in Chennai on 5th and 6th March, in the Mahayana (Madhyamaka) and Vajrayana streams. Dr. Uma Krishnaswamy and the P.S. Society for Music Arts and Culture are hosting this unique programme.

About Ven Thomthog Rinpoche

Venerable Thomthog Rinpoche, The Abbot of Namgyal Monastery, was born in Lithang, Eastern Tibet, of a noble family, in 1951. At the age of five he was recognized by Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, the junior tutor of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, as the reincarnation of the previous Thamthog Rinpoche.

In 1982, Rinpoche completed his monastic studies at Sera Jhe University, South India, and received his Geshe Lharampa degree, the highest honorary degree one can receive in the Gelukpa tradition.

Over the years, Rinpoche has received major transmissions and empowerments from many great masters like His Holiness the 14 th Dalai Lama, Late Kyabje Ling Rinpoche, Late Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, and so forth.

In 1987, he became the Director and Spiritual teacher of Tibetan Study Centre of Ghe Pel Ling in Milan. Since then, he has been giving teachings on Buddhism both in Italy and other parts of Europe, as well as in America.

Along with his tireless and compassionate efforts in helping others through his skilful teaching, Rinpoche has made great contributions for Tibetan communities with many charitable works both in and outside Tibet, by building hospitals, schools and monasteries.

In August 2009, the Venerable Thamthog Rinpoche was appointed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as Abbot of Namgyal Monastery, the personal monastery of His Holiness in Dharamshala, India.
